A stunning goal by Ashley du Preez fired Stellenbosch FC to a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs in a 2021/22 DStv Premiership match at FNB Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Victory extended the club’s unbeaten run to nine matches this season and moved Stellies level on 19 points with leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played two fewer matches, atop the league standings. Chiefs remain sixth, seven points back.
The Amakhosi started the game well and forced Sage Stephens into a good save in the seventh minute. Sfiso Hlanti’s flick on from a Khama Billiat free-kick called the Maroons goalkeeper into action and while the rebound fell favourably at Daniel Cardoso’s feet, he could only succeed in troubling the side-netting.
Stephens had to make another save a minute later when Bernard Parker found space inside the area, but the shot-stopper was alert to the danger and got his body behind the forward’s powerful drive from an acute angle.
Having survived an initial wave of pressure, Stellies recovered well and dominated the remainder of the first half.
Junior Mendieta weaved his way into a dangerous area in the 31st minute before pulling the trigger and Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi did well to palm the ball away from danger.
The Nigerian, though, was well beaten seven minutes later. Mendieta found Du Preez who outsmarted Cardoso before thumping a right-footed shot past Akpeyi from range for his fourth goal of the season, and arguably his best to date.
Du Preez, riding a new-found wave of confidence, was unlucky not to complete his brace on the hour mark when his shot hit the base of the post and not the back of the net.
Erick Mathoho and Billiat threatened for Chiefs at the other end of the pitch, but the hosts didn’t do enough in front of goal and ultimately Stellies held on for a famous win.
