Delight as Lufhereng residents become first time homeowners

Dignity was restored to some residents of Lufhereng extensions 5 and 6 on Wednesday 17 June when they finally became homeowners after years of renting backyard rooms or shacks.

Johannesburg Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for housing, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso issued 250 title deeds to overjoyed Lufhereng residents at the Slovoville Community Hall, in Region D.

Located to the west of Soweto, Lufhereng is one of the city’s biggest integrated housing developments, characterised by the provision and integration of various land uses and numerous housing opportunities for mixed-income households.

It was a dream come true for the new homeowners, some of whom said they had almost lost hope after years of renting and living in informal settlements.

Accompanied by councillor for Ward 53, Cllr Mthokozisi Dlamini, MMC Mabaso addressed residents under strict Covid-19 health and safety protocols.

“Home ownership brings renewed hope to the thousands who were previously dispossessed. The provision of adequate homes is an integral part of achieving the City’s strategic developmental goals,” said MMC Mabaso.

The MMC acknowledged that the City of Joburg is faced with a huge housing backlog, but urged communities to be patient as the city strives to provide more housing.

“We must thank you for being patient with us as government. There is no better gift a parent can give their children and grandchildren, than that of a decent home.”

One of the beneficiaries, Thembi Ngcongo, 74 was on cloud nine  after receiving her title deed.

“Almighty Lord, I did not know that one day when I depart this world, I would do so in a decent home in my name, I always told myself that I would die in an informal settlement. Thank you so much for this gift (title deed), it really means a lot to me and you have now given me hope to live longer.”

Another beneficiary, Daniel Seate, 79, said he and his wife were delighted to finally own their home.

“Owning our home is a great feeling. We are very pleased that we now have this title deed, and we would like to say thank you to all those who have worked tirelessly to ensure that I see this moment in my lifetime,” said a cheerful Seate.

MMC Mabaso said the Government of Local Unity administration has dedicated itself to speeding up the delivery of title deeds and it has been a top priority of his deliverables to the citizens of Joburg.
