Stellenbosch FC claimed the bragging rights in the Mother City derby on Saturday evening, thrashing hosts Cape Town City 3-0 at the Athlone Stadium.
The result, secured by goals from Alan Robertson and Judas Moseamedi (two), sends the Maroons to the top of the DStv Premiership on goal difference, while the Citizens drop to 11th spot with their first defeat of the season.
Stellies were hit with an early injury blow, as Sibusiso Mthethwa was forced off with a back problem and replaced by Alan Robertson inside the opening quarter hour.
City looked to be the more imposing force in terms of attacking pressure, with Fagrie Lakay almost finding the net with a drifting cross which hit the woodwork, while midfielder Abdul Ajagun shot high and wide at the midway point of the first half after good set-up play from Thamsanqa Mkhize.
The Maroons, after weathering an attacking storm from their hosts, broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, with a corner kick seeing Mogamad De Goede nodding down for Robertson to sweep the ball home from close range.
City looked for a quick reply and had efforts from Tashreeq Morris and Mduduzi Mdantsane which were no trouble for Stellenbosch goalkeeper Lee Langeveldt.
At the same time, the visiting team looked dangerous whenever they had the chance to break forward on the counter, and Stanley Dimgba shot just wide on one such foray in the 42nd minute, leaving the game at 1-0 in favour of Stellies at the interval.
City made a tactical switch at the start of the second half, as Craig Martin came in for Lakay, and they soon struck the woodwork again, with Taariq Fielies’s header finding the post, via Stellies defender Zitha Kwinika, from a corner kick on 51 minutes.
The hosts made further changes on the hour mark to bring on Thabo Nodada, Khanyisa Mayo and Mpho Makola, and they soon opened the visitors’ defence for Martin to shoot on goal, but his effort was straight at ‘keeper Langeveldt.
The teams cancelled each other out and a tense finish looked on the cards until the 83rd minute, when former City striker Judas Moseamedi sealed the game for the Maroons.
The burly striker showed his strength by out-muscling Citizens goalkeeper Hugo Marques in a tussle for a dropping ball just inside the box, and Moseamedi then had the easiest job of stroking the ball into an empty net for 2-0 – though City’s protests were loud and vociferous.
Moseamedi punished his former team again in the final minute of regulation time, running onto a great through ball from Ashley Du Preez before stabbing the ball beyond the ‘keeper to wrap up a famous win for Stellenbosch.
The teams will be back in DStv Premiership action next weekend, with City away to Swallows FC on Friday 24 September and Stellenbosch hosting Chippa United the following day.
