BETWAY COMMEMORATES NATIONAL DISABILITY MONTH WITH WBSA

Super Group-owned Betway South Africa, in close partnership with Wheelchair Basketball South Africa (WBSA) today joined hands in commemorating National Disability month at the recently launched Betway Multi-purpose sport centre in Soweto.

Remaining true to its brand promise of aiding the growth of all sports – more importantly, sports for athletes living with disabilities, South Africa’s leading sports betting and entertainment brand proudly commemorated the special day with a fun-filled and educational day of wheelchair basketball games that concluded with a cash donation towards WBSA’s programmes.

The exciting day saw the brand bringing together SA sporting icons such as the legendary Lucas Radebe,  Springboks legend, Victor Matfield,  Sekhukhune United FC’s Thabo Senong, as well as SA netball legend, Simnikiwe Mdaka who all partnered with the brand’s ambassadors and WBSA athletes in making use of the exhibition matches to raise awareness and applaud the tenacious spirit of athletes living with disabilities

The commemoration of the day and donation to WBSA is not the first time the brand has taken an active role in supporting athletes living with disabilities.

To date, Betway has partnered with various disability sports organisations such as the South African Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD), South African Deaf Football Association (SADFA), Western Province Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (WPSAPD) as well as the KwaThema Disability Sports Club.

Welcoming the generous gesture from Betway, which marked the second donation to Wheelchair Basketball South Africa from the brand was WBSA CEO, Charles Saunders who said the brand continues to be at the forefront of making a difference where it matters most.

“In a fragile economy recovering from the pandemic, it is most welcomed that Betway recognises Wheelchair Basketball SA’s efforts in striving to integrate those less fortunate into society by using sport as a medium. We take this opportunity in applauding Betway for making this difference in our communities. It is not just a game, it’s a way of life, and this ongoing partnership will impact on developing the next generation’s aspirations to better themselves,” said Saunders.

“There are currently 3.5 million people with disabilities in SA, making up 6.6% of our total population with only 4% of all disabled persons receiving medical grants and this has severely affected their quality of life. It has always been our intention that in using the game of wheelchair basketball, it is our little contribution to changing society’s perception of disability as well as giving hope that there is life after disability,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the invited sport icons and legends, coach, Thabo Senong who took part in the exhibition matches thanked Betway for using such an initiative to educate the community about the significance of the day while also raising awareness about the sport.

“Today is a very important reminder of how much of a caring brand Betway prides itself in being. Not only have they been consistent in making a difference in our communities, but they also make it a point that they touch the lives of people that are at times side-lined due to living with disabilities. I want to applaud them for not only raising awareness to the communities but even to us people who work in sport,” said Senong.

Betway SA Country Manager, Phillip Superamonien expressed his delight in the brand’s ability to identify unique yet critically important initiatives that make a meaningful impact in society.

“Today bears testament to our tireless efforts of making a significant impact in our communities. Our various partnerships and community upliftment programmes have been greatly welcomed by a number of communities across the country. However, we remain just as committed to athletes and members of society who display great tenacity in not allowing any form of disability to stand in the way of their ability to partake in any sport of their choice.

We, therefore, want to thank and encourage WBSA to continue the great work that they have been doing for wheelchair basketball in the country,” Superamonien concluded.
