After months of poor and cloudy eyesight caused by cataracts, Bhutana Lehutso (67) has now fully gained sight after a successful surgery at Leratong Hospital during the second edition of the Mandela Day Surgical Marathon.
Lehutso is one of 80 individuals who received the gift of sight as part of the initiative to honour Nelson Mandela by the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH). This saw Leratong Hospital’s Ophthalmology Department collaborating with the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa, AWQAF SA, and the Islamic Muslim Association.
Luhutso said that he was met with fear and uncertainty when his eyesight started deteriorating earlier this year. As his eyesight became poorer and poorer, he made his way to Leratong Hospital after getting a referral from an Optometrist he had recently consulted with.
Little did he anticipate the lifeline that awaited him at the hospital through a free cataract surgery that would restore vision to his left eye.
“It was almost unbelievable when I was informed that I will be receiving a cataract surgery free of charge. I am now armed with the ability to read again and play with my grandchildren,” said Lehutso.
Since 2005, Leratong Hospital has conducted a total of 11 315 cataract surgeries to help many including the elderly and school children regain their sight. Through its eye camp, it also renders free eye care services, including screening, treatment and the provision of eyewear.
The project is in line with the GDoH’s mission, which is aimed at reducing waiting times for cataract operations. These cataract surgery camps are also offered at the Sebokeng Hospital and Pretoria West Hospital as part of the collaboration. Each surgery costs over R20 000 and is provided free of charge through this collaborative effort.
Dr Petronella Raman-Abdulla, Head of Leratong Hospital’s Ophthalmology Department, highlighted the team’s dedication in clearing surgery waiting times, having successfully completed 753 procedures in the last year alone.
