After a career spanning nearly four decades, fifty-nine-year-old Tercia Wessels is retiring from her role as Deputy Director of Finance in the department of Community Development. Her final day at the City of Johannesburg will be Friday, August 30, 2024.

Wessels has described her time at the City as fulfilling and rewarding. “The City of Johannesburg has been the number one company I’ve wanted to work for. It’s where I experienced joy and happiness,” she says.

She has witnessed the evolution of the City of Johannesburg from the Northern Metropolitan Local Council. She began her career at the Randburg Town Council in the mid-1990s, holding various positions such as Clerk, Creditors Clerk, Accountant Procurement, and Sub-Accountant.

In 1996, she was appointed Operational Manager: Finance at the Northern Metropolitan Local Council. During this time, she was responsible for managing budgets, cash management, investments, VAT reconciliation, and budget control. In the early 2000s, she was appointed Operational Manager: Finance in Region 4 Finance Department.

Wessels also served as Assistant Director: Finance of Community Development and Health between 2002 and 2006. She was responsible for management and statutory accounting support, financial planning and reporting, internal control, and budgets.

She was appointed to her current role in 2006. In this role, her duties included budget control, accounting support, financial planning, and leading a team of over 20 people.

Wessels describes herself as a positive and grounded person. Her pillar of strength is her husband, Anton. They have been married for 41 years and have two children and four grandchildren. She is family oriented, religious, and enjoys supporting her family. She plans to spend her retirement pursuing hobbies and travelling with her husband.

In her parting words, Wessels gives thanks to God. “I give all the praise to the Lord for my success and achieving 39 years of healthy and happy work relationships.”
