ARTS ALIVE 2024: SHOWCASSING JOBURG’S CREATIVE SPIRIT DURING 30 YEARS OF DEMOCRACY

Arts Alive, the City of Johannesburg’s premier arts and culture programme, returns with a dynamic line-up of events celebrating 30 years of democracy in South Africa.

​Running from September 2024 to June 2025, Arts Alive has evolved into a vibrant showcase of Johannesburg’s rich arts, culture, and heritage through an array of artistic programmes and festivals. This year’s theme highlights the role of the arts in reflecting the city’s diverse culture and fostering a sense of solidarity and active citizenry.

The 2024 programme features an exciting range of cultural activities, including music, design, crafts, comedy, dance, theatre, visual arts, enlightening dialogues, and empowering capacity-building initiatives.


“We are proud to present Arts Alive that truly reflects the creative spirit of Johannesburg. Arts Alive 2024 is a testament to the power of the arts in shaping our democracy and promoting social cohesion,” says Cllr Kabelo Gwamanda, MMC of Community Development.

Over the years, Arts Alive has fostered strong collaborations with various bodies within the creative and cultural industries, ensuring streamlined efforts, reduced duplication, and effective use of resources to achieve maximum impact. This year’s programme continues to build on that legacy, with an emphasis on inclusivity and community engagement.


Residents and visitors are encouraged to participate in the diverse events planned for Arts Alive 2024/25, helping to grow the market for local creative’s and support the local economy. The festival aims to bring about economic activity, spiritual enrichment, and social cohesion.
