Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dada Morero, and the MMC for Economic Development, Nomoya Mnisi, led the Accelerated Service Delivery initiative in Region D, Ward 21, covering Tladi and Moletsane in Soweto on Friday, 6 September 2024.
This initiative aims to tackle longstanding service delivery challenges and enhance residents’ quality of life through swift, on-the-ground solutions. The operation focused on critical service delivery issues impacting daily life in the community, including:
- Water and sanitation improvements
- Pothole repairs and road markings
- Litter collection
- Streetlight repairs
- Tree pruning and grass cutting
- This collaborative effort between local and provincial governments seeks to accelerate the resolution of service delivery problems. Premier Lesufi emphasised the need for visible action, stating: “Our presence must be felt on the ground. We’re here to attend to these challenges and take immediate steps to resolve them.
- “I am glad the Executive Mayor and his entire team from various service units of the city are here, along with representatives from the provincial government. We are tired of calling mass meetings that bear no fruit. We are here to do walkabouts, interact with problem areas, and provide quick solutions.”
- Mayor Morero echoed these sentiments, highlighting the initiative’s focus on achieving quick and tangible results by addressing service delivery failures and improving communities. “We are not ending here. The intention is to look at all service delivery failures and respond quickly to those that we can, like potholes, road markings, grass cutting, tree pruning, and street lighting.”
- A key focus of the visit was the aging water reservoir infrastructure in Moletsane and Tladi, which has been in use for over 40 years. The outdated valves have caused problems with low water pressure, unreliable supply, or no water at all. While replacing the valves is expected to take 12 months, both the Premier and Mayor urged Joburg Water to explore faster alternatives to shorten this timeframe.
- Mayor Morero reassured residents that interim measures are in place to maintain water supply during the repair process.
