JOIN JOBURG FIRST CYCLING AWARENESS RIDE THIS SUNDAY

Virgil James

Support cycling safety in Johannesburg by joining the City’s first-ever Safe Cycling Awareness Ride this Sunday, 6 October, at 08am. Starting from Metro Park in Braamfontein, this 25km ride will highlight the importance of sharing the road between cyclists and motorists.

With cycling on the rise, it’s crucial to improve road safety for everyone. The City of Joburg, in partnership with Pedal Power Association (PPA), is leading this effort as part of October Transport Month.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Dada Morero, urges everyone to participate, saying: “Cyclists should feel safe on our roads and use our bike lanes without fear. Let’s protect our cyclists—#CyclistLivesMatter.”

What to expect:

  • Road Safety Awareness: Cyclists and motorists will learn best practices for safer road sharing.
  • Infrastructure Boost: Joburg is committed to improving cycling lanes and signage.
  • Community Engagement: Get involved with local cycling clubs, group rides, and safety workshops.
  • Visibility and Enforcement: Cyclists will be encouraged to wear high-visibility gear, and stricter traffic law enforcement will protect them.

Liz Heydra from the PPA says: “Cycling is a healthy, eco-friendly way to travel, and with more awareness, we can make our roads safer for all.”

Expect water points, backup vehicles, emergency services, and free coffee for riders at the finish line. JMPD will ensure a safe and smooth event, with security provided for vehicles parked at the venue.
