GLENROSE XABA SHINES AT THE SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE  2024

The Spar Women’s Challenge brought vibrant energy to Marks Park Sports Club in Emmarentia, as women of all ages and fitness levels came together for an inspiring day of racing on Sunday, 6 October 2024. 


Held in partnership with the City of Johannesburg, the event offered a 5km fun run and a competitive 10km race, creating an inclusive atmosphere for all participan

In the 10km race, Glenrose Xaba claimed victory with an impressive time of 32:08 minutes. “I was really looking forward to this race, and my aim was to end the Spar Grand Prix season with another win,” said Xaba after her triumph. Close behind, Tadu Nare of the Nedbank Running Club took second place, followed by her Ethiopian teammate, Diniya Abaraya, who finished third.


Xaba is coached by double Olympic gold medallist Caster Semenya.


While elite athletes showcased top-tier performances, the event also welcomed everyday runners and walkers, with many mothers even pushing strollers along the scenic route. Residents lined the streets, cheering and creating an electric atmosphere that boosted the spirits of participants.


For 25-year-old Thulisile Nkabinde, the event was more than just a race: “It felt like being part of a supportive community. Everyone, no matter their fitness level, felt motivated and encouraged. The energy from the crowd really helped me keep going.”

The Spar Women’s Challenge has grown into a flagship event on Johannesburg’s sporting calendar, celebrating women’s strength, health, and camaraderie. Whether aiming for personal bests or simply enjoying the day, participants left feeling uplifted and accomplished, with smiles all around.
