In a significant step towards empowering communities through secure land ownership, the Gauteng Provincial Government handed over 1 900 title deeds to residents of Impumelelo and Obed Mthombeni Nkosi in Lesedi Local Municipality on Tuesday, 15 October 2024.
The handover event was marked by jubilation as residents, some of whom had waited for years, finally received formal recognition of their property rights.
The transfer of title deeds represents not only the conclusion of housing projects but also the beginning of a legacy of security and economic participation for the beneficiaries.
Addressing the residents, Premier Panyaza Lesufi said, “This document brings dignity to you as you are part of our country’s economic activity. The title deed permits you to participate in the economy, and we, as the provincial government, want to congratulate you on your security of tenure. “
For her part, MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara said the event is the first of many steps she will take to restore the dignity of South African homeowners and ensure that all citizens have access to the benefits of property ownership.
“The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements remains dedicated to transforming communities and enhancing the quality of life for all residents. This title deed handover is a testament to our commitment to building a brighter future for the people of Gauteng.”
The atmosphere inside the packed marquee was festive, with songs, dancing and tears.
One of the beneficiaries, Tinny Marumo, said she was happy to own a house finally.
“Today marks a new life for me and my children, as I received my title deed. This means I officially have a place to call home.
“I wish to thank the government for doing right by many of us. We applied for ours long ago and are title deed holders today. Hope this gesture won’t happen only to us, but to many other people who have registered for houses as far back as 1994,” she added.
