The Gauteng Provincial Government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing scholar transport safety following a series of concerning incidents in the province.
The most recent occurred earlier this week when 42 learners from Relebogile Secondary School in Carletonville were involved in a serious scholar transport accident.
In response to this and other incidents, Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane announced that the Department of Education would initiate discussions to improve the safety standards of scholar transportation.
“We are deeply concerned about the well-being of the affected learners, and we will ensure they receive the necessary medical care.”
Department of Roads and Transport Spokesperson Lesiba Mpya highlighted the interdepartmental efforts to address scholar transport safety.
These efforts involve collaboration between the Departments of Community Safety, Roads and Transport, and Economic Development.
“Gauteng Provincial Government has been impounding unroadworthy vehicles and prosecuting non-compliant drivers with offences as stipulated in the National Land Transport Act read together with National Road Traffic Act,” said Mpya.
The Gauteng government is committed to addressing road safety issues while celebrating and showcasing achievements during October Transport Month (OTM), which is dedicated to improving road networks and transport infrastructure.
