CHILDREN RECEIVE SPECIALISED TREATMENT AT NEW EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

The newly built Paediatric Emergency Department at Sebokeng Regional Hospital is tailor-made to meet the needs of children and ensure that they receive specialised care required in an environment designed just for them.

The facility boasts 15 functional areas, comprising of two cubicles with two beds each, one open cubicle with six additional beds next to the reception area, one resuscitation room and an outdoor playground designed to specially make our young patients feel welcome and comfortable.

MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko said that the opening of this facility will help alleviate the current pressure faced by Sebokeng Hospital.

“With this new facility, we are improving our capacity and most importantly, the quality of care as well. The GDoH will offer much-needed assistance to children suffering from a variety of medical emergencies from simple illnesses to severe injuries,” said the MEC.

Previously, the Paediatric Emergency Department was within the Adult Emergency Department. However, the separation of the two departments was a necessary intervention aimed at ensuring that children receive focused attention and specialised treatment, reducing the need for referrals to various other facilities such as Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.

This project was made possible by the generosity of the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust in partnership with other sponsors. It can accommodate more than 10 patients and has been designed to have space for extra beds.

“This act of generosity demonstrates your commitment to the well-being of our children and the understanding of the impact that quality health can make upon the lives of our future leaders. Your contribution to improve our healthcare infrastructure and building a better future for our children where quality emergency care is not an exception but a norm, is truly appreciated,” responded the MEC to the donation.

The CEO of the Hospital, Makibiti Madolo said that the opening of the newly built Paediatric Emergency Department is long needed and will ensure that the facility provides the much-needed services to children in need of emergency care.

“It is quite an emotional time for us as the hospital as we have long waited for this state-of-the-art unit to open and now that we have finally opened it, we are going to ensure that we maximise its intended purpose.

In addition, MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko said that the GDoH is making progress in upgrading health facilities as part of the broader strategy to meet the ever-growing needs of Gauteng communities.

“The opening of this Paediatric Emergency Department reaffirms our commitment to expand access to quality healthcare for all. It demonstrates that we can deliver on the promise of universal access to care for all people regardless of their background.”
