The City of Johannesburg’s Sport and Recreation Directorate is thrilled to announce the success of the 2024 Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Awards. This prestigious event honoured the outstanding achievements of athletes, coaches, and officials who have made significant contributions to the sport of athletics.
A highlight of the evening was the recognition of Akani Simbine, the 31-year-old international athlete hailing from Kempton Park. Simbine was crowned the Central Gauteng Athletics Sportsperson of the Year for his exceptional performance and leading a youthful 400m team to Olympic silver medal glory.
Karabo Mabilo, the acting President of CGA, expressed gratitude for the City of Johannesburg’s invaluable support: “The City plays a crucial role in the development and promotion of athletics. This strong partnership between CGA and the City helps foster athletic talent and creates opportunities for our young athletes in Johannesburg.”

The Executive Director for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Siyanda Mnukwa, said: “We are behind CGA and Athletics South Africa, more especially women athletes.
