As Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital marks its 10th anniversary, the facility has seen significant improvements since it first opened its doors to the Soweto community in 2014. These advancements reflect the hospital’s ongoing commitment to providing quality healthcare and better serving the needs of its patients.

Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko joined the hospital in celebrating its 10-year anniversary on Wednesday, 28 November 2024. The hospital is named after Bheki Mlangeni, a courageous advocate for justice who paid the ultimate price for his dedication to equality and community upliftment.

Over the years, the hospital has made substantial infrastructure improvements to enhance service delivery. The mental health wards have been refurbished to meet safety regulations, and a cutting-edge Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system has been installed to optimize the efficiency of the operating theatres. Additionally, security upgrades, including the construction of a 3-meter-high wall, have been implemented to prevent vandalism and ensure the safety of patients and staff.

In the previous financial year, the hospital achieved an impressive 92% Patient Experience of Care Satisfaction Rate, surpassing its target and demonstrating its preparedness to get ready for”.” the National Health Insurance (NHI). These results highlight the staff’s commitment to enhancing the patient experience and providing high-quality healthcare.

MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko said the improvement in patient care is due to the “I Serve With A Smile” campaign which embodies a spirit of service. It has fostered a culture of kindness, accessibility, and professionalism among the staff, ensuring that every patient interaction is positive and empowering.

“The fact that this hospital is named after Bheki Mlangeni, a courageous advocate for justice who paid the ultimate price for his dedication to equality and community upliftment, means that his legacy must inspire us to serve with integrity and compassion. I encourage every staff member to emulate his values, ensuring that every patient who walks through these doors feels respected, cared for, and hopeful,” urged MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko.
