JOBURG HEALTH URGES RESIDENTS TO PREPARE FOR WINTER WAVE

Ayanda Radebe
The City of Johannesburg Health Department is urging residents to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their loved ones from respiratory infections as the winter season approaches. The influenza season is expected to begin within the coming weeks, and those at high risk of severe illness—such as adults aged 65 and over, individuals with underlying health conditions (including heart and lung disease), people living with HIV or tuberculosis, and pregnant individuals—are strongly advised to get vaccinated against the flu to prevent serious complications.

Influenza spreads mainly through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.

Co-infections with other respiratory viruses are possible, which makes it even more important to adopt good hygiene habits. These include covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, staying at home when feeling unwell, avoiding touching your face with unwashed hands, and refraining from close contact—such as kissing, shaking hands, or sharing cups and utensils—especially with those who are vulnerable.

Typical flu symptoms include a runny nose, reduced appetite, coughing, sneezing, fever, and wheezing. Infected individuals are usually contagious for three to eight days. Wearing masks and practising social distancing are especially encouraged for those who are already unwell.

“The influenza vaccine is available free of charge at public clinics on a first-come, first-served basis for those in the high-risk categories,” said Dr Gadirobe Mothibi, Executive Director of the City’s Health Department. “It can also be purchased at pharmacies for individuals who wish to protect themselves, even if they don’t fall into the high-risk groups.”

Dr Mothibi added: “Parents and caregivers should urgently take children showing signs of breathing difficulties, reduced fluid intake, or worsening symptoms to their nearest clinic or healthcare provider for immediate attention.”
