Joburg Speaker of Council, Cllr Nobuhle Mthembu on Wednesday recently joined hands with humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers to distribute essential food parcels and winter supplies to struggling families. As winter tightens its grip in the City of Johannesburg, the office of the Speaker stepped in to bring much-needed relief to vulnerable households in Ward 123, New Doornfontein.
A total of 150 food parcels were handed out, each containing staple items such as maize meal, milk, soup, baby formula, and other basic foodstuffs. To further assist households in the face of dropping temperatures, the parcels also included warm blankets and cleaning detergents.
Cllr Mthembu highlighted the importance of solidarity and collective action in the face of rising socio-economic challenges.

The Speaker reaffirmed her office’s commitment to ensuring that no resident is left behind.
“Everyone deserves a warm meal and a sense of dignity, especially as the cold weather continues to set in. We must embrace the spirit of ubuntu and
help those in need,” she added.
Clifford Mabe, a representative of Gift of the Givers, echoed the call for unity and support, saying: “Our mission is to bring hope and dignity to those in need.
Partnering with the Speaker’s office allows us to reach the heart of communities that are often overlooked. Together, we are making a real difference – one parcel, one blanket, one family at a time.”
This latest initiative underscores a growing partnership between the City and civil society organisations to support communities hardest hit by poverty and food insecurity—particularly during the harsh winter season.
