JDA BEGINS PREPARATORY WORK FOR THE REHABILITATION OF EBHARENI PUBLIC TRANSPORT FACILITY

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), in collaboration with the City of Johannesburg’s Transport Department, has initiated the preparatory phase for the rehabilitation of the Ebhareni Public Transport Facility, located at 20 Eben Cuyler Street, Diepkloof, Region D, Ward 29.

Bounded by Eben Cuyler Drive, Immink Street, and Zwelisha Street, the 5944 m2 municipally owned property will undergo a comprehensive transformation aimed at improving safety, accessibility, and commuter experience.

As part of the early-stage planning, the JDA has appointed a professional team to deliver the concept for the upgraded facility. The team’s scope includes:

  • Conducting a feasibility study, including civil and structural assessments, and reviewing land and statutory requirements;
  • Developing a concept design for the Ebhareni Public Transport Facility;
  • Preparing detailed technical drawings and facilitating their approval;
  • Leading a comprehensive stakeholder engagement process from project inception to completion.

The Ebhareni Public Transport Facility Rehabilitation Project is designed to enhance the efficiency and functionality of this vital transport hub, supporting both formal and informal transport operators. Key proposed upgrades include:

  • Demolition and replacement of trader units
  • Construction of a new night office, guardhouse, entrance canopy, and refuse area
  • Upgrades to public ablution facilities and addition of a cleaner’s room
  • Extension and refurbishment of administration offices
  • Improvements to taxi canopies and commuter waiting areas
  • Ground resurfacing and drainage enhancements
  • Universal accessibility features for all users

“The JDA continues to invest in infrastructure that improves mobility and connects communities. The Ebhareni PTF upgrade will serve as a local economic enabler for Diepkloof and surrounding areas,” said JDA CEO Themba Mathibe.

The project will be in phases to ensure that daily operations at the busy facility continue with minimal disruption. Input from the local community and stakeholders will guide the development, helping ensure the final facility responds to local needs and enhances commuter comfort and operational efficiency.

This project reinforces the JDA’s commitment to sustainable urban development and efficient public transport infrastructure that is inclusive, resilient, and transformative.
