A NEW ERA FOR AFRICAN URBAN LEADERSHIP

The Cities of Johannesburg and Tshwane are two of South Africa’s most dynamic and forward-thinking metropolises, have been appointed as the Co-Chairs of the Urban 20 (U20) for the 2025 cycle, following the handover from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in November 2024.

This historic appointment marks a significant milestone not only for South Africa but for the entire African continent. As Co-Chairs, Tshwane and Johannesburg will lead a global coalition of cities in addressing pressing urban challenges, fostering sustainable development, and amplifying the voice of African cities on the world stage.

Under the theme Cities Leading the Way in Reimagining Global Change, Tshwane and Johannesburg will champion innovative, inclusive, and sustainable solutions to redefine how cities respond to global challenges. This theme reflects their commitment to driving transformative change, not only within their own borders but across the globe, by leveraging the power of urban innovation and collaboration.
