The Johannesburg Development Agency [JDA], acting on behalf of the City’s Transport Department, has commenced preparatory work for Phase 2 of the Rosebank Public Transport Facility upgrade.
This project aims to modernise the bustling facility, located on Cradock Avenue with access from Biermann and Jellicoe Avenues, to meet the burgeoning commuter demand in the rapidly expanding Rosebank precinct.
The existing facility has increasingly struggled to cope with the significant development and resultant increase in commuters within one of Joburg’s most dynamic hubs, known for its seamless blend of business, art, culture, and lifestyle.
The upgrade is structured in two distinct phases to ensure comprehensive improvement. Phase 1, completed in 2023, focused on essential infrastructure upgrades, including sidewalk improvements, stormwater system enhancements, and intersection upgrades.
Phase 2 will be delivered in two parts: Part 1 involves crucial town planning processes, such as road closures, land consolidation, and securing all necessary regulatory approvals. Part 2: Encompasses the detailed planning, design, and subsequent construction of significant facility enhancements, which will include a new ablution block, dedicated hawker stalls, a designated eating area, and extension of the existing loading bay canopy.
JDA CEO Themba Mathibe explains the importance of the project. “The Rosebank Public Transport Facility is a vital hub in one of Joburg’s fastest-growing precincts. This upgrade will improve the daily experience of commuters and support inclusive economic activity through better facilities for informal traders.”
Mathibe notes that the JDA remains committed to working with all stakeholders to deliver a resilient, accessible, and future-ready transport node.
He says the JDA continues to maintain its commitment to inclusive development, ensuring continuous engagement with key stakeholders throughout the project, including local Taxi Associations, Ward 117 representatives, and the Rosebank Management District.
This upgrade is integral to the City’s broader vision of enhancing public transport infrastructure, improving the commuter experience, and promoting the sustainable growth of Joburg’s vibrant urban nodes.
