A recent public polling survey conducted by the City’s Environment and Infrastructure Services Department [EISD], in partnership with Breathe Cities and the Clean Air Fund, reveals widespread concern over air quality among residents.
The survey, involving over 3,000 participants, aimed to gather crucial data to inform the development of a tailored Clean Air Zone [CAZ] policy. Key findings show 92% of respondents are concerned about air pollution, with 78% believing it negatively impacts their health, yet only 5% are aware of existing policies.
Lebo Molefe, Director: Air Quality and Climate Change in the City, states, “This polling report has unequivocally shown us that residents are not only aware of the problem, they are actively seeking to be part of the solution. The Clean Air Zone policy we are developing must intrinsically reflect their lived experiences and aspirations. By investing in green infrastructure, clean energy, and public education, we can build a Johannesburg where clean air is a right, not a privilege.”
Executive Mayor, Cllr Dada Morero, underlines the urgency: “Air pollution is not merely a global environmental issue; it is a public health emergency. In Johannesburg, we witness its effects most sharply during the winter months, particularly in our most vulnerable communities. As Executive Mayor, I am unequivocally committed to mobilising the full resources of the City to take bold, decisive action that will clean our air, protect our health, and secure a better quality of life for every resident.”
