A palpable sense of pride and celebration permeated the Braamfischerville Community Hall recently, as the City’s Human Settlements Department made a significant stride in formalising property ownership.
Led by Executive Mayor Councillor Dada Morero, the MMC for Human Settlements Councillor Mlungisi Mabaso officially handed over 260 title deeds to deserving beneficiaries in Joburg’s Region C.
This undertaking underlines the City’s ongoing commitment to providing secure tenure and uplifting communities long awaiting legal recognition of their homes.
Mayor Morero urged recipients to protect their heritage: “This is more than just a document; it is a symbol of security, dignity, and a legacy for future generations. You have waited a long time for this moment. Please, do not sell your homes. This is your heritage.”
Councillor Mabaso echoed the sentiment, also cautioning against illegal sales. He revealed over 200 title deeds are awaiting collection, but stressed, “Braamfischerville has 6,000 homes that still need to be formalised. We are coming back, and we are coming back soon.”
Councillor Mabaso reinforced that RDPs are not for sale and beneficiaries can only benefit once, countering issues of illegal resales leading to demands for new housing. The emotional impact was palpable. Linah Legadimana, clutching her deed, expressed profound joy: “I have a title deed now, and I am the owner of a house. This government has delivered on its promise.”
Edwin Matalane, equally moved, added, “I’m lost for words, just thankful for my title deed. I’ll sleep peacefully tonight. I’ve learned patience pays off.” For many, this moment was transformative, providing stability and future opportunity.
