RIDE JOBURG RESCHEDULES, LAUNCHES FREE PARTICIPATION DRIVE

Virgin Active Ride Joburg, Africa’s premier timed cycling race, has announced a strategic date change for its 2025 event.

Originally slated for Sunday, 16 November, the race will now take place on Sunday, 26 October 2025, a decision made to avert logistical conflicts with Johannesburg’s hosting of the G20 Summit.

“We had to make a strategic decision to move the event to ensure both rider safety and logistical efficiency,” explained Race Director Fritz Pienaar.

“With world leaders and international delegations descending on the City in mid-November, road closures and high-level security protocols around Nasrec would have made it challenging to deliver the Ride Joburg experience our cyclists deserve.”

The October event promises to uphold its top-tier experience, featuring 97km of fully closed roads, premium water points, enhanced safety and medical support, and a picturesque finish near the revitalised FNB Stadium Dome, all set against the backdrop of blooming Jacaranda trees.

This new timing is anticipated to attract a stronger international field, with stakes significantly elevated by a substantial R200,000 prize for both the first male and female finishers.

In a concerted effort to broaden accessibility, Ride Joburg has introduced the Free Ride initiative, offering complimentary race entries to financially disadvantaged South Africans.

“Cycling is more than just a sport, it’s a tool for freedom, health, and community connection,” stated MMC for Community Development, Cllr Tebogo Nkokou.

“This initiative aligns perfectly with the City’s commitment to building inclusive, active communities.”

Applications for the Free Ride initiative will close on Thursday, 31 July 2025.
