Bhongolwethu Jayiya scored three goals in the opening 16 minutes as Cape Town City roared to a convincing 4-1 Absa Premiership win over Chippa United at Athlone Stadium on Monday evening.
The Citizens forward completed his treble within the space of 10 minutes before Thamsanqa Mkhize added a fourth before the break. Rhulani Manzini bagged what proved to be a mere consolation for the visitors.
Victory moves City to the top of the log standings as Chippa continue to fight at the wrong end of the log standings.
Jayiya set the tone for what was to follow as early as the third minute, as he headed Ebrahim Seedat’s pin-point cross inches over the crossbar.
The former Maritzburg United forward opened the scoring three minutes later; having shrugged off the challenge of Paseka Mako he powered a right-footed shot into the top of the net.
Mako was having a difficult time in containing the City forward who would complete his brace with 12 minutes on the clock. The Chilli Boys’ fullback caught ball watching as Jayiya ghosted in to poke home from close range.
Jayiya completed his hat-trick four minutes later – showing great determination to eventually nod home to send the home fans into absolute delirium. His 10-minute hat-trick the fastest in Absa Premiership history.
Daniel Akpeyi had to be at his brilliant best to deny Lebogang Manyama in the 42nd minute. The Nigerian’s one-handed save denying the City captain from an acute angle.
City, though, would not be denied a fourth before the break as Mkhize latched onto a cross by Aubrey Ngoma in first-half stoppage-time, 4-0 at the interval.
The hosts continued to dominate with Lehlohonolo Majoro, Lebogang Manyama and Roland Putsche all testing Akpeyi in the second-half before Chippa pulled a goal back.
Rhulani Manzini’s shot from the edge of the area having the beating of Shu-Aib Walters in the 76th minute, as the visitors finally found their reward for a sustained spell of pressure.
Andile Mbenyane then saw his effort rattle the post in the 84th minute with Chippa a different team in the second.
Chippa ended the game with 10-men following the dismissal of Lerato Manzine in the 90th minute. The Chilli Boys striker picking up two yellow cards in quick succession. It had little outcome on the result, though, as City walked away with all three points.
