HELP JOBURG PAVE THE WAY FOR SMARTER AND SAFER TRANSPORT CORRIDORS

Elias Nkabinde

As part of its 2040 Growth and Development Strategy (2040 GDS), the City of Johannesburg is working to upgrade public and non-motorised transport options. To support this, the Transport Department, through the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), is developing a plan for Integrated Corridor Transport Management (ICTM).

ICTM is a coordinated approach to improving how people and goods move through key routes in the city—connecting roads, buses, taxis, and other systems to reduce traffic, improve safety, and make travel more efficient.

From 28 July to 08 August 2025, short transport surveys will take place in these corridors:

•     Diepsloot – Fourways – Randburg CBD – Sunninghill – Sandton

•     Orange Farm – Johannesburg CBD

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers might briefly stop the motorists to answer simple questions. The goal is to collect data to improve transport planning and infrastructure.

“These corridors are essential for mobility and the local economy,” says JDA CEO Themba Mathibe. “We’re using data to design safer and more inclusive transport routes that respect the dignity of our residents.”

The City encourages everyone’s participation and assures that all responses will be confidential and used for research and planning purposes.
