The Joburg Market recently extended its agricultural outreach to the Bojanala District in the North West Province. The team participated in the Madibeng Local Education Office Career Orientation & Expo, aimed at empowering Grade 9 to 11 pupils from agricultural schools to make informed subject and career choices.
The event was hosted by Subject Education Specialist Ingrid Teme and Senior EMS Specialist Nteo Mohlamme and encouraged learners to explore their potential in South Africa’s fast-evolving agricultural landscape.
Tshegofatso Maakwe, Acting Senior Manager for Marketing and Communication at Joburg Market, urged pupils to consider careers in agriculture and play an active role in growing the sector. “The agricultural sector needs young people. There’s a wide range of careers to explore — from Market Agents and Agricultural Economists to Extension Officers and more.”
Pupils were also introduced to the inner workings of the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market and received information about plant care courses offered by the Agricultural Research Council. These practical insights are vital for strengthening the agricultural value chain and encouraging innovation across provinces.
This outreach forms part of Joburg Market’s ongoing commitment to agricultural education, skills development, and food security, extending well beyond Gauteng. By engaging youth in Bojanala, the Market is helping to close the gap between theory and practice, inspiring the next generation of agricultural leaders.
