FlySafair, South Africa’s leading low-cost airline, celebrated the launch of its new direct route between Cape Town and Hoedspruit with a ceremonial event at Hoedspruit Airport yesterday. The new service marks a significant step forward in improving access to the central Kruger region and unlocking tourism-driven economic growth across Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
Tourism remains a cornerstone of South Africa’s economy, contributing 6.4% to GDP and supporting over 1.5 million jobs in 2024, according to the Department of Tourism. Yet, much of this activity remains concentrated in Gauteng and the Western Cape. By introducing direct, affordable flights to Hoedspruit, one of the country’s most biodiverse and conservation-rich regions, FlySafair aims to help rebalance this distribution and stimulate growth in under-served areas.
“Hoedspruit is a gateway to some of South Africa’s most iconic wildlife experiences, including the Kruger National Park and surrounding private reserves,” said Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair. “This new route is about more than convenience, it’s about creating opportunities for local communities, supporting conservation tourism, and helping travellers experience the full richness of our country.”
To mark the occasion, FlySafair hosted a celebratory event at Eastgate, attended by key government officials including the Premier of Limpopo, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Violet Mathye, and the Mayor of Maruleng Municipality, Councillor Tsheko Musolwa. They were joined by tourism stakeholders and FlySafair leadership. Guests were welcomed with a water cannon salute and a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by speeches. Special thanks to Kapama for their support in hosting the event.

The new route will operate three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with fares starting from R1,570 one way. Tickets are available via the FlySafair website and mobile app.
This launch complements FlySafair’s increased Cape Town–Mbombela service, now operating daily, and forms part of the airline’s broader commitment to expanding domestic connectivity and supporting South Africa’s tourism recovery. Together, these routes offer direct access to both the central and southern Kruger regions, making it easier for travellers to explore the bush and the beach in one seamless itinerary.
