Swimming season has opened with a bang in Johannesburg, and the City is pleased to announce that the Ivory Park Swimming Pool Complex is a step closer to welcoming the public.
Developed as part of the City of Johannesburg’s commitment to expanding social infrastructure, the facility has now completed its water and electricity connections.
Final works are underway, including the bulk sewer connection for the ablution facilities, testing of pumps, chlorination and balancing of pool water, as well as final cleaning and quality checks before handover.
Once open, the complex will serve as a vital social and recreational hub for the greater Midrand area, including Kaalfontein and surrounding neighbourhoods.
The facility boasts an Olympic-style pool, a splash pool, grandstand seating, and eco-friendly features such as solar water heating, rainwater harvesting, grey-water recycling and waterless toilets – ensuring it promotes both community wellbeing and environmental sustainability.
The CEO of the Joburg Development Agency, Themba Mathibe, said: “This project was among those delayed in the past. Since our appointment as new management, we have prioritised addressing the challenges, including outstanding town planning matters, to ensure the pool is completed. The people of Ivory Park have waited a long time for this moment, and we are determined to deliver.”
“For us at the JDA, this project is about more than building a pool. It’s about creating inclusive spaces that uplift communities, foster healthier lifestyles, and contribute to Johannesburg’s long-term sustainability.”
The Ivory Park Swimming Pool Complex adds to the City’s network of over 50 public pools across seven regions. It forms part of a broader strategy to redress historic infrastructure backlogs while promoting safe, vibrant and liveable neighbourhoods.
The JDA looks forward to officially handing over the facility to the City of Johannesburg’s Community Development department, which is set to bring people together, create opportunities for recreation, and strengthen the City’s vision of a greener, healthier, more resilient Johannesburg.
