Residents from wards 50 and 129 gathered at Doornkop Hall on Saturday, 8 November 2025, for a Community-Based Planning (CBP) feedback session aimed at reviewing progress over the past three years and refining priorities for inclusion in the City of Johannesburg’s five-year Integrated Development Plan (IDP).
City officials from key entities and departments – including City Power, the Johannesburg Roads Agency, and Human Settlements — attended to address service delivery issues and clarify community priorities. Outside the hall, information stalls were set up where residents could directly engage with officials throughout the meeting.
Ward councillors Cllr Phumlile Shange (Ward 50) and Cllr Bheki Mgaga (Ward 129) led discussions, responding to residents’ questions and guiding deliberations.
The session highlighted major developmental priorities, including:
- Land Proclamation
The Gauteng Provincial Government has devolved portions of land to the City, enabling township establishment processes in Doornkop. Residents called for the expedited proclamation and formalisation of informal settlements, a process being handled by Development Planning and the Johannesburg Property Company. - Tarring of Gravel Roads (Blocks 1–9)
The JRA is progressing with the tarring of gravel roads from Block 1 to Block 9. The project will continue in phases across other wards, based on community prioritisation. - Upgrading of Doornkop Community Hall
Residents requested the refurbishment and expansion of the community hall, particularly the roof and amenities. The project has been noted for inclusion in the 2026/27 IDP budget.
Community member Zukiwa Khope raised concerns about the poor maintenance of local parks, citing safety issues and vandalism of playground equipment. She urged the City to improve security and upkeep to make parks safer for children.
The meeting concluded with strong participation and constructive dialogue, underscoring the City’s commitment to inclusive planning and collaboration with communities to ensure responsive service delivery and sustainable development in Doornkop.SOURCED.
