JOHANNESBURG GREEN LEADER WINS  GLOBAL URBAN PARKS AWARD

 Sascha-Lee Joseph

Johannesburg’s commitment to sustainable urban development has received international recognition, with Bishop Ngobeli, Senior Manager: Protected Areas and Environmental Enforcement at Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), receiving the World Urban Parks 2025 Award.

The accolade recognises Ngobeli’s leadership in transforming Johannesburg into a resilient, people-centred green city and positions the City among the world’s leading urban environmental innovators.

Through his work, Johannesburg has strengthened its urban forestry strategy, expanded accessible public parks, and reinforced environmental enforcement in protected areas. His approach integrates sustainability with community development, ensuring that green spaces serve as both ecological assets and inclusive social hubs.

“My journey is to remain dedicated to building a more sustainable and inclusive world. I will continue championing the power of green spaces to transform cities, improve quality of life and combat climate change,” says Ngobeli.

His impact extends beyond Johannesburg. He has worked with municipalities across South Africa and the African continent to promote investment in green infrastructure, share best practices and develop policies that enhance the long-term sustainability of parks and open spaces.

Ngobeli previously served as President of the Institute of Environment and Recreation Management and as an advisor to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, where he provided expert counsel on forestry and access to green spaces in historically under-served communities.

Over the years, he has received several accolades, including the World Urban Parks Emerging Leader Award (2020), the Mail & Guardian Greening the Future Award (2020), and the South African National Parks Kudu Award (2024).

Ngobeli views urban greening not only as an environmental priority, but as a social justice imperative — ensuring equitable, liveable cities for all residents, regardless of background or socio-economic status.
