CITY POWER ENGINEER EARNS GLOBAL CERTIFICATION IN ENERGY MANAGEMENT

Sascha-Lee Joseph

The City of Johannesburg’s efforts to strengthen energy efficiency have received international recognition through the achievements of Ipfi Muedi, Chief Engineer for Energy Efficiency at City Power.

Muedi has been awarded the Certified Energy Manager accreditation by the Association of Energy Engineers, a globally recognised certification in the field of energy management. The achievement was acknowledged by the South African Association for Energy Efficiency, placing her among a select group of professionals worldwide who hold this credential alongside the Certified Energy Auditor qualification she previously obtained.

For Muedi, the certification represents an opportunity to further contribute to sustainable energy practices within the City.

“This accreditation represents an important step in my journey of continuing to grow and contribute to the field of energy management,” she says.

Over the past eight years, she has supported several initiatives aimed at improving energy efficiency within municipal infrastructure. Her work forms part of the City of Johannesburg’s broader efforts to reduce electricity consumption, strengthen operational efficiency and support long-term sustainability.

One of the most significant initiatives she led was the City’s compliance with Energy Performance Certificate regulations for public buildings. The project required the coordination of energy audits, verification of consumption data and management of regulatory processes. As a result, the City successfully achieved compliance for 57 municipal buildings.

“This initiative improves transparency in how our buildings consume energy and strengthens how we manage energy performance across municipal infrastructure,” she explains.

Muedi has also supported infrastructure improvements within City Power facilities, including retrofitting administrative buildings with energy-efficient LED lighting and improved air-conditioning systems, helping reduce electricity consumption and operating costs.

In addition, she has contributed to the installation of 10 electric vehicle charging stations at the City Power Head Office as part of efforts to introduce cleaner mobility solutions within the municipal fleet.

Muedi holds a Master’s of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from Stellenbosch University and a Bachelor of Science in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand. She also completed the Middle Management Development Programme in Business Management through Regent Business School.

Passionate about mentorship and inclusion, she hopes her journey will inspire more young women to pursue careers in engineering and energy management.

Looking ahead, she remains focused on advancing programmes that strengthen energy management systems, improve building performance and support the transition to more sustainable energy practices within the City of Johannesburg.
