JOBURG SWITCHES ON FIRST ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING HUB

The City of Johannesburg, through its electricity utility City Power, launched Phase One of its electric vehicle (EV) charging station on 24 March 2026, marking a significant step in the City’s transition towards cleaner energy and smarter mobility.

The new EV Charging Complex in Booysens forms part of City Power’s 10-Point Energy Plan and signals a shift towards modern, efficient and sustainable municipal operations. The initiative will see the gradual conversion of the City’s fleet from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles, supported by a growing network of charging infrastructure across Johannesburg.

This milestone aligns with the City’s broader agenda to improve service delivery, modernise infrastructure and build a resilient energy system. It also positions Johannesburg as a leading metro embracing innovation and global best practice in sustainable transport.

Executive Mayor Cllr Dada Morero welcomed the development. “This launch marks a bold step towards a cleaner, greener Johannesburg. We are not only investing in infrastructure, but in a future where our residents benefit from efficient services, reduced emissions and new economic opportunities. This is how we build a city that works for all—sustainably and inclusively.”

The transition to electric vehicles is expected to reduce fuel costs and improve operational efficiency across municipal services. At the same time, the City continues to prioritise the protection of its electricity network, particularly as it works to curb losses currently estimated at around 29% due to infrastructure challenges, illegal connections and criminal activity.

Importantly, the EV programme supports a just energy transition by prioritising skills development. City Power is investing in reskilling and upskilling initiatives focused on EV maintenance, battery technologies and charging systems, ensuring that employees and young people are equipped for opportunities in the evolving energy sector.

Community engagement remains central to this transition. Programmes such as the Youth Energy Ambassadors initiative are already promoting responsible energy use and encouraging communities to safeguard infrastructure. In addition, the 2026 Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management Schools Competition is open until 30 April, inviting learners to develop innovative solutions for sustainable energy use.

Looking ahead, the City plans to expand its EV charging network across service delivery centres, depots, major transport routes and public facilities, with further rollout into townships and communities. Innovations such as battery-swapping technology are also being explored to enhance efficiency.

This launch marks the beginning of a broader transformation as Johannesburg accelerates towards a cleaner, smarter and more inclusive future.
