Speaker of Council Cllr Margaret Arnolds recently led a prestigious blazer ceremony at Constitution Hill, honouring Team South Africa for the upcoming World Schools Debating Championship in Kenya.
Held at one of the country’s most symbolic heritage sites, the event marked 32 years of democracy while celebrating the excellence of young South Africans selected to represent the nation on a global stage. Speaker Arnolds delivered the keynote address and presided over proceedings, placing youth development and leadership firmly in the spotlight.
The ceremony was further elevated by the presence of First Lady Dr Tshepo Motsepe, who joined the Speaker in robing the national team. Together, they conferred blazers on the learners, signalling both achievement and the responsibility of representing South Africa internationally.
In her address, Speaker Arnolds reflected on the significance of Freedom Day and the importance of investing in future leaders. “There could be no more fitting venue than Constitution Hill,” she said. “This site reminds us that democracy was earned through courage, sacrifice and a belief in a better South Africa.”
She described the blazer as more than ceremonial attire. “It is a symbol of discipline, achievement and national pride. When you wear it, you step into responsibility and representation.”
The programme brought together a range of stakeholders, including Programme Director Cllr Kamogelo Malikane, Junior Mayor Zwi Ramashia, Team SA Head Coach Itu Mohanoe, technical staff, and proud families.
Speaker Arnolds emphasised the role of debating in shaping ethical and engaged citizens.
“You are not only debaters, but you are also ambassadors,” she said. “You carry the voice of a democratic South Africa – one that values dialogue, respect and understanding.”
She added that debating equips young people with critical thinking and communication skills essential for leadership. “The future of our country depends on those who can build bridges and solve problems.”
The City used the platform to reaffirm its commitment to youth empowerment and global competitiveness.
Cllr Arnolds encouraged the team to carry the nation’s hopes with pride. “Wear your blazers with humility and confidence. Go and show the world the brilliance of South Africa.”
As the team prepares for Kenya, the ceremony stands as a powerful reminder of the impact of mentorship, opportunity and belief in young people.
