CITY OF JOHANNESBURG REMOVES SIX ILLEGAL BILLBOARDS IN RANDBURG

The City of Johannesburg, through its entities and departments responsible for by-law enforcement (City Power, JPC, Development Planning and JMPD), removed a total of six illegal outdoor advertising structures in Randburg on Tuesday. Three of the removed billboards belonged to repeat offenders who continue to violate the City’s Outdoor Advertising By-laws.

Speaking during the operation, the Chief Executive Officer of the Joburg Property Company, Musah Makhunga, expressed disappointment at companies that continue to disregard the City’s regulations despite ongoing enforcement efforts.

“The City of Johannesburg remains committed to enforcing its by-laws and ensuring compliance within the outdoor advertising sector. It is concerning that some companies continue to illegally erect advertising structures and make unlawful connections to public infrastructure while generating profit without contributing financially to the City,” said Makhunga.

Makhunga further emphasised that the City will intensify its operations across Johannesburg to ensure that all outdoor advertising companies comply with municipal regulations and contribute responsibly to the local economy.

“These illegal structures not only undermine the City’s by-laws but also pose safety risks to residents and motorists. We will continue working with all relevant departments and law enforcement agencies to clamp down on non-compliant operators,” he added.

COJ reiterates its commitment to protecting public infrastructure, maintaining compliance with municipal by-laws, and ensuring a safe and orderly outdoor advertising environment across the city.

To date, COJ has collected nearly R100 million through its intensified crackdown on illegal outdoor advertising.

This increase reflects ongoing efforts to ensure adherence to the City’s Outdoor Advertising By-Laws while also improving revenue collection to support service delivery across the municipality.
