EX-JOBURG OPEN CHAMP STRIKES GOLD AGAIN WITH FAIRYTALE WIN IN BELGIUM

Thirteen years after winning the Joburg Open, South African golfer Richard Sterne has claimed another memorable title, ending a lengthy wait for victory with a dramatic triumph at the Soudal Open in Belgium.

The 44-year-old secured his first DP World Tour title since lifting the Joburg Open trophy in 2013, producing a remarkable finish to edge the field on 24 May 2026.

Sterne’s defining moment came on the 17th hole when he delivered a stunning eagle that all but sealed victory. From 276 yards, he struck a flawless five-wood that landed just four feet from the cup, setting up the decisive shot that took him to 18-under par.

“I think it’s one of the best shots I’ve ever hit,” Sterne said after the emotional win.

For much of the final round, fellow South African Zander Lombard appeared on course for victory after taking a comfortable overnight lead. However, Sterne mounted a late charge while Lombard faltered with a costly double-bogey on the 14th.

The victory marked an emotional milestone for Sterne, whose career has been disrupted by injuries and surgeries over the past decade, including three wrist operations, hip surgery and a titanium disc replacement in his back.

“There were times I didn’t think I’d get through it,” Sterne admitted. “It’s been a very tough road.”

A special highlight for the former Joburg Open champion was celebrating the victory with his children, who were old enough to witness him win for the first time. “One of my goals was for my kids to actually see me win. It’s been pretty much that long.”

Sterne’s victory also continued a strong season for South African golf on the DP World Tour, becoming the country’s sixth title of the season.

Although Lombard finished three shots behind on 15-under par, he remained optimistic.

“A win feels right around the corner,” Lombard said. “I’m doing a lot right and hopefully I can carry this form through the rest of the season.”

For Sterne, the victory was a reminder that perseverance and class can still deliver magical moments.
