The Electoral Commission (IEC) in Gauteng Province is pleased to announce its state of readiness for the first voter registration weekend taking place on 20 and 21 June2026, in preparation for the Local Government Elections scheduled for 4 November 2026.
All operational, logistical and administrative preparations have been completed to ensure that eligible citizens can register and update their voter registration details efficiently and conveniently across the province.
In the context of a local government election the correct placement of voters in wards is a crucial element for the delivery of free and fair elections. The Commission calls on every voter to update their details especially the address as this will place them on the correct ward segment of the voters’ roll.
Therefore, the voter registration weekend offers an opportunity to ensure that voters’ details are accurately captured and updated.
Furthermore, in local government elections, voters vote in the voting district in which they are registered. There is no statutory mechanism to vote outside of the voting district in which voters are registered. This has been part of the framework since the establishment of democratic local government in the year 2000.
Following the conclusion of the electoral delimitation process, Gauteng has increased its number of voting station network from 2,797 to 2,832. These comprise 2,629 permanent voting stations and 203 temporary voting stations. All lease agreements and procurement processes for temporary voting stations have been finalized, access has been secured from landlords, and temporary voting station tents will be erected ahead of the registration
weekend. 2To support the registration process, more than 6,352 electoral staff members have been appointed and trained.
Essential registration materials, including voter management devices(VMDs), voting station maps, stationery packs and directional signage, have been delivered to secure storage facilities and are ready for deployment. All voting stations will be open from 08:00 to 17:00 on Saturday, 20 June2026, and Sunday, 21 June 2026.
The Electoral Commission welcomes the Department of Home Affairs’ decision to provide identity document services during the registration weekend.
This collaboration will assist eligible citizens who require identity documentation to register and participate in the electoral process.
The Commission calls on all eligible South Africans to take advantage of the voter registration weekend to register to vote, verify their registration status, or update their details on the voters’ roll. Citizens must present a South African Smart ID card, green barcoded identity book, or a valid Temporary Identity Certificate when registering or updating their information. While proof of address is not required, voters must provide details of their place of ordinary residence to ensure they are correctly registered in the appropriate voting district and ward.
The Commission further encourages citizens to utilize its digital services to register online at https://registertovote.elections.org.za , verify registration details and locate their voting stations at https://maps.iec.org.za/vsfinder/.
Voters may also contact the IEC Contact Centre on 0800 11 8000, which will remain operational throughout the registration weekend. As preparations for the 2026 Local Government Elections continue, the IEC in Gauteng remains committed to delivering elections that are free, fair, transparent and credible.
The Commission urges all eligible citizens to play their part in strengthening South Africa’s constitutional democracy through active voter registration and participation.
