Orlando Pirates make their long-awaited return to competitive action as they kick off their Betway Premiership title defence against newcomers Milford at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday.
The historic fixture marks the start of a marathon race towards league honours with the Buccaneers aiming to be the first to the finish line for the second season running. Their first hurdle is a side making its top-flight debut after beating tough competition to progress through the promotion playoffs.
While the match-up between the two sides carries a semblance of a David vs Goliath affair, both will go in knowing that nothing is guaranteed and only superiority on the pitch will matter.
The Challenge Ahead
After years of consistently stepping on the winners’ podium in domestic cup competitions, the Buccaneers finally ended their long wait for the league title in the 2025/26 season. While the feat has meant that they finally added an elusive feather to the cap, it has brought with it a new challenge – making them a side each opponent looks to measure itself against. The KwaZulu-Natal based outfit will be alert to the fact, and a scalp the size of the defending champions would be the perfect statement to make early on in a season where every result is an opportunity to command respect amongst the elite.
Milford have showcased their giant-killing abilities in the past, eliminating the likes of Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune from the Nedbank Cup in the past before beating playoff rivals Cape Town City and Casric Stars to a spot in the Premiership.
Known as The Stallions, the visitors have beefed up their squad ahead of a historic campaign, bringing on the likes of goalkeeper Sanele Mthembu and striker Scelo Masilela. While thin on top flight experience, they do have a squad littered with players who have done the hard yards in the likes of former Moroka Swallows defender Mbonisi Chagi and ex-Lamontville Golden Arrows left-back Zolani Nkombelo, who encountered the Soweto Giants on a few occasions during his spell with Abafana Besthende.
Their battle-hardened playing personnel will however have to be at the top of its game against a Bucs squad that has continued to be strengthened well into the final week of preparations.
Days after announcing the transfer of Norwegian striker Sebastian Pedersen from Sogndal, the Buccaneers confirmed another addition to their stocks in former Marumo Gallants and Stellenbosch midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi. The duo joins a number of new arrivals who could make their official Pirates debut over the weekend.
Also akin to the arrival of additional new signings is the availability of the likes of experienced defender Tapelo Xoki and midfielder Sihle Nduli, both fully fit after months on the sidelines, while the midfield pair of Masindi Nemtajela and Kabelo Dlamini also near a return to action.

Xanti Pupuma (Milford head coach): “We’re not going to change, but I can tell you probably we’re going to increase the intensity a little bit. So my assessment is that if I compare the games or what I’ve seen to where we’re coming from, you have a little bit more time or space in the Premiership.”

Saturday’s encounter at the Orlando Amstel Arena will be the first-ever meeting between Orlando Pirates and Milford FC at the top-flight level.
