Kaizer Chiefs will be gunning for progression in the MTN8 Wafa Wafa Cup Competition quarterfinal this afternoon when they lock horns with Lamontville Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium this afternoon.
Amakhosi are fresh from a 3-1moral booster win against PSL newbies Kruger United in their Betway Premiership opening match of the season last week at Mbombela Stadium. While Arrows played a goalless draw with Chippa United.
According to Chiefs website, since their participation in the Top 8 tournament in 1972 the Glamour boys have won the competition 15 times and will now go in search of a 16th crown, when they host arrows in their quarterfinals at the Calabash Stadium Sunday evening.
Chiefs’ first game in the Top 8 competition, when it was then known as the BP Top8, saw them win their 1972 quarterfinal against Real Morning Stars, 3-0, with Aerial ‘Pro’ Kgongoane scoring their first goal. They would ultimately reach the final, losing out to Orlando Pirates.
Amakhosi won their first title in 1973, defeating Pimville United Brothers in a two-legged final, emerging victorious in both legs,3-2 and 3-0 respectively. Historically, Chiefs have won back-to-back titles in 1981 and 1982, as well as 1991 and 1992.
Meanwhile, Abafana Bes’thende are also winners and champions of the MTN8 Cup in 2009/10 season.
Kaizer Chiefs and Lamontville Golden Arrows have played around 39 to 42 official matches historically across all competitions. Kaizer Chiefs leads the head-to-head record with about 22 to 24 wins, while Golden Arrows has around 8 to 10 wins, and 7 to 9 matches have ended in draws.
