ORLANDO PIRATES RESERVES TAKE HISTORIC DSTV DISKI CHALLENGE TRIUMPH TO NETHERLANDS

In a groundbreaking moment for the club, Orlando Pirates Reserves, fresh off their first-ever DStv Diski Challenge title (DDC), are set to make their mark in Europe.

From August 14 to 23, the Buccaneers will embark on a nine-day Winners Tour in the Netherlands, aiming to broaden their horizons beyond the South African football landscape.

Following a remarkable season where they clinched the DDC title with a decisive 2-0 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns, the Reserves are ready to showcase their talent amidst some of Europe’s most storied youth programs.

This tour promises not only competitive fixtures but also a chance to immerse themselves in different footballing philosophies and styles. The football action kicks off on August 18, when the Pirates face SBV Vitesse Arnhem at their Papendal training complex.

Established in 1892, Vitesse boasts a rich history of nurturing talent, with notable players like Roy Makaay and Martin Ødegaard having honed their skills there.

The Papendal complex serves as the club’s hub, integrating youth and senior teams under one roof.

Two days later, (20 August), the Buccaneers will take on De Graafschap at the Bezelhorst training complex in Doetinchem. The club is renowned for its focus on youth development, with its U21 side the current KNVB Dutch Cup winners for U21 teams.

The tour then heads to Rotterdam on 22 August for a mini-tournament at the Robey Academy, where Pirates will face Sparta Rotterdam and Japan’s Yamanashi Gakuin High School.

Sparta Rotterdam, founded in 1888, is the oldest club in the Netherlands and is recognised for one of the country’s renowned youth academies.

Its alumni include Dutch football figures such as Danny Blind, Louis van Gaal, Dick Advocaat and Winston Bogarde, as well as current international Denzel Dumfries.

The Winners Tour will also give the Buccaneers the chance to experience the atmosphere of Dutch top-flight football, with the group scheduled to attend a live Eredivisie match at the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam on 16 August.

The football experience continues in Rotterdam, with a second live game at Sparta Stadion on 22 August.

For the DDC champions, the Netherlands trip is the next step after a season that saw them make their mark in the competition. It provides the players with an opportunity to compete against unfamiliar opposition, experience a different football culture and gain first-hand exposure to a system renowned for developing young talent.
