The Gauteng Department of e-Government is deeply saddened by the tragic discovery of the bodies of eight women in the Ekurhuleni region. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones and communities affected by these horrific incidents.
The Department wishes to emphasise that the technology infrastructure implemented across Gauteng will support the work of law enforcement authorities. Over the years, the Province has invested significantly in digital public safety infrastructure, providing the South African Police Service and other law enforcement agencies with access to advanced technology that can assist in crime detection, investigation and intelligence gathering.
These capabilities include access to an extensive network of CCTV cameras across Gauteng and integration with the Vumacam camera ecosystem, which together provide valuable investigative leads, movement tracking capabilities and digital evidence that can assist investigators in piecing together criminal activities. During the 2025/26 financial year, the province had access to 7,271 Vumacam cameras and a cumulative total of 960 CCTV cameras across Gauteng.
While technology alone cannot prevent every crime, it provides law enforcement with an important advantage by enabling faster access to information, improving situational awareness and strengthening investigative capabilities. The Department remains committed to ensuring that these digital tools continue to support efforts to combat crime and enhance public safety across the province.
