COUNTDOWN TO THE AFRICAN PRIDE GAMES 2026 OFFICIALLY BEGINS!

The countdown to the African Pride Games 2026 officially began at the Joburg Theatre on 17 September 2026, where the Phuthi Lekoloane Foundation, in partnership with the City of Johannesburg’s Sports and Recreation Directorate and the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, hosted the official media launch and tournament draw.

The event brought together football players, team managers, supporters, commentators, partners and other stakeholders to celebrate the growth of the African Pride Games and unveil what promises to be an exciting edition of the tournament.

The 2026 edition will feature 32 senior teams and 16 Under-23 teams, setting the stage for a competitive programme of football that will bring communities together through sport.

The senior competition will see teams competing for a R50 000 first prize, while the runners-up will receive R30 000. In the Under-23 category, the winners will take home R30 000, with R15 000 going to the runners-up.

One of the highlights of the launch was the unveiling of the Kasi Flavour Awards. The initiative is aimed at adding another dimension to the tournament by recognising and celebrating the culture, personality, creativity, and community spirit that surround football in the kasi.

City of Johannesburg Assistant Director for Community Development Dr Karabo Semenya emphasised the important contribution of women to sport and society.

“As we celebrate the African Pride Games, we must also recognise the important contribution women continue to make in sport, both on and off the field. We cannot ignore the challenges women face in society, including the tragic killings of women in Ekurhuleni. We need collective action to ensure that women and girls can participate in sport and in our communities in safety, with dignity and without fear,” said Dr Simenya.

With the teams now drawn and preparations underway, the African Pride Games 2026 promises to combine competitive football with entertainment, community engagement and a celebration of diversity.

The stage is set. The teams are ready. The countdown to the African Pride Games 2026 has officially begun.
