MEC MOILOA AND MINISTER NKWINTI MET TO RESOLVE

CHALLENGESSEDIBENG SEWER NETWORK.

The Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements Dikgang Uhuru Moiloa met yesterday, with the Minister of Water and Sanitation Gugile Nkwinti to resolve the challenges at the Sedibeng Regional Sewer Scheme (SRSS).

Minister Nkwinti said that the meeting was about discussing solutions to the challenges facing the district of Sedibeng that have delayed the project.

MEC Uhuru Moiloa said that the pressure in Gauteng was that the government had taken a position to move from providing houses to building human settlements.

“We have taken a decision to build new cities. We have 38 new cities under different stages of planning with about 16 already under construction, so this is an associated pressure of bulk infrastructure,” he said.

Moiloa noted that the challenge in Gauteng is that the province has not equalled the enthusiasm for provision of human settlements, and that of bulk infrastructure.

“All the spheres of government which include, local, national, provincial governments and Rand Water, had a fruitful discussion on how to cut the red tape and unlock development so that the economy of the province can begin to grow,” he said.

The MEC said that it was of major importance to resolve the issues of water and sanitation as a precursor to unlock development.

He said that the meeting agreed that there was a need to complete the work currently underway as it was 90 percent complete, but facing some challenges.

Moiloa said that by completing the work underway development such as Savanah City, the River City and other developments in the south of Gauteng will be unlocked to move forward and benefit the people.
