BIDVEST WITS BEAT CITY TO GO TOP

Bidvest Wits overcame Cape Town City 2-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday.

The victory took the Clever Boys to the top of the league standings, while the Citizens slipped down to 12th place.

The Clever Boys got off to the best possible start as they broke the deadlock just eight minutes into the encounter.

Simon Murray was fouled inside the City box by goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh and Wits were awarded a penalty.

The Scottish striker then stepped up and beat Leeuwenburgh from the spot-kick to make 1-0 to Wits.

The Citizens pushed for the equalising goal, with Teko Modise pulling the strings in the middle of the park for the hosts.

The accomplished midfielder’s curling free-kick was punched away by towering shot-stopper Leewenburgh.

The hosts continued searching for the equalising goal and Wits keeper Darren Keet made a great save to deny City striker Matthew Rusike just before the break.

However, Wits doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime and it was Murray who grabbed his brace to make it 2-0 at halftime.

The Clever Boys were under pressure after the restart as the Citizens pressed the visitors, with Rusike working hard upfront for hosts.

Gavin Hunt, the Wits head coach, decided to pull out Haashim Domingo in the 62nd minute and he introduced Elias Pelembe.

However, the hosts continued to to push forward in numbers and City head coach Benni McCarthy introduced Ayanda Patosi in the 69th minute.

City launched late attacks in search of at least two goals to ensure that the game ended in a draw. Wits were able to hold onto their two-goal lead in dying minutes if the game.
