POLOKWANE SHOCK HIGH-FLYING SUPERSPORT

Polokwane City humbled SuperSport United 3-1 in an Absa Premiership match at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The victory took Rise and Shine to the top of the league standings, while Matsatsantsa slipped down to fifth spot on the table.

Matsatsantsa started the match brightly and Mwenya Chibwe was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the opening stages of the game.

The Polokwane shot-stopper made a comfortable save from Kudakwashe Mahachi’s shot, before punching away Evans Rusike’s effort.

Rise and Shine grew in confidence as the match progressed and SuperSport keeper Ronwen Williams had to make a brilliant diving save to keep out Puleng Tlolane’s header.

However, Williams was beaten on the half-hour mark when Nicholas Motloung headed home to make it 1-0 to Polokwane with Jabulani Maluleke grabbing an assist.

The visitors tried to respond with a goal, but they suffered a blow as they were reduced to 10 men after Onismor Bhasera sent off after making a reckless tackle heading into the halftime break.

Thamsanqa Gabuza was introduced by SuperSport head coach Kaitano Tembo at the beginning of the second-half.

Matsatsantsa applied some pressure on the hosts despite being numerically disadvantaged and Gabuza saw his effort narrowly miss the target.

However, the visitors were left vulnerable at the back and they were punished by Puleng Tlolane in the closing stages of the encounter.

The 28-year-old striker beat Bafana Bafana international Williams with a curling effort to make it 2-0 to Polokwane with 13 minutes left on the clock.

SuperSport were awarded a late penalty when Bradley Grobler was fouled by Chibwe and Aubrey Modiba stepped up and converted from the spot-kick to make it 2-1.

However, Salulani Phiri had other ideas as he sealed Polokwane’s 3-1 victory over SuperSport with a powerful low shot in stoppage time.
