MARITZBURG SECURE WIN OVER CAPE TOWN CITY

Maritzburg United secured a 1-0 win over Cape Town City in an Absa Premiership match at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday night.

The hard-fought victory saw the Team of Choice climb up to the seventh spot on the league standings, while the Citizens slipped down to 11th place.

The match got off to a lively start with the Citizens and Team of Choice attacking each other in search of an early goal.

City striker Kermit Erasmus’ glancing header floated across the face of the goals with the Maritzburg defence caught ball watching in the seventh minute.

Thabiso Kutumela’s effort narrowly missed the target as Maritzburg looked to break the deadlock a few minutes before the half-hour mark.

Erasmus was looking lively for the hosts and in the 28th minute, the diminutive striker unleashed a shot which went inches wide of the target.

Maritzburg were then awarded a penalty on the stroke of halftime when Keanu Cupido was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box.

Kutumela then stepped up and beat City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh from the spot-kick to make it 1-0 to Maritzburg heading into the halftime break.

City coach Benni McCarthy introduced Ronald Putsche and Shaquille Abrahams at the beginning of the second-half.

However, City continued to attack and Judas Moseamedi had a chance to double the visitors’ lead just after the hour-mark.

Daniel Morgan set-up Moseamedi in the box, but the lanky forward placed his effort just wide of the right-hand post.

The Citizens launched late attacks as they looked to grab a late equalising goal, but they could not beat Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper Richard Ofori in the visitors’ goal-posts.

Ultimately, the match ended in a 1-0 victory in favour of Maritzburg after they contained City in the closing stages of the match.
