Durban – Africa 5s ambassador and football icon, Samuel Eto’o is back in South Africa for the final leg of the Africa 5s campaign. Having reached great milestones with Castle Lager in 2019, the “Indomitable Lion’s” return to SA sees him build stronger ties with the brand as well as other stakeholders through an indaba-style media event in eThekwini.

One of the most ground-breaking announcements made in 2019, was that the tournament would expand to more markets in Africa and the well-received addition of a women’s league. The media event was attended by the tournament’s first female ambassador and KwaZulu-Natal born footballer, Amanda Dlamini as well as representatives from the Ethekwini Municipality’s Parks, Arts and Culture, where Head of the Department, Thembinkosi Ngocobogave a heart-warming welcoming speech.

As the brand closes the chapter on the 2019 edition of this unique cross-border social football competition aimed at creating social cohesion and building lifetime friendships – the build-up to the 2020 tournament has already started as the brand promises to grow the tournament even further.

“One of the most exciting features of this particular tournament, is that friends across the African continent get to come together, travel together and experience new things through one of the fastest growing sport, 5-a-side  football. What’s even more amazing is that they get to do this with our incredible friend and a true philanthropist who believes in building communities through sport, Samuel Eto’o.” said Castle Lager Brand Director, Kudzi Mathabire.

“This has been an incredible year for Africa 5s as we expanded our reach by adding more markets in to the tournament, but of even greater significance is the addition of a women’s league to the tournament. We partnered with an incredible football legend in Amanda Dlamini who really assisted us in building the women’s league. We are looking forward to building more friendships beyond borders in the near future and we thank everyone who has supported the tournament for the past two years. There is definitely more to look forward to, as we constantly seek innovative and fun ways to bring people together.” concluded Mathabire.

Eto’o shared the same sentiments by elaborating on how sport, particularly football is key in uniting all Africans. “It is wonderful to see all the participants traveling and coming together for the continental finals. The spirit is always jovial and we see this in the way they dance, sing and play football. It also warms my heart to see the addition of women to the tournament, this truly sets Africa 5s apart from any other social football tournament. I am so grateful to be working on the Africas 5s tournament with Castle Lager.” said Eto’o

Castle Lager has sponsored football on the continent for over 60 years, and continues to provide fans with the opportunity to live-out their passion for the beautiful game through this unique and exciting campaign.

The 2019 Champions, Uganda (women’s division) and Nigeria (men’s division) are set to take a trip to Barcelona from the 18th of December 2019 where they will be hosted by Eto’o and treated to a LIVE experience of the El Clasico.
