Maritzburg add to Ajax pain

Ajax Cape Town’s poor form continued as they suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Maritzburg United in an Absa Premiership clash at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday evening.

Andrea Fileccia and Brian Onyango on target for the hosts as Fadlu Davids further underlined his credentials to take over as permanent head coach at the club. Rodrick Kabwe bagged what proved to be a mere consolation for the Urban Warriors.

Defeat leaves the Cape side winless in 2017 with Stanley Menzo’s troops now finding themselves in a serious relegation battle – following wins for Baroka FC and Free State Stars this weekend.

Ajax Cape Town looked the more likely in the early exchanges with Mark Mayambela seeing his fizzing effort fly inches wide in the 25th minute.

It would be the Team of Choice to open the scoring, though, as Fileccia found the back of the net with a smart finish five minutes before the break. The goal the Belgian’s first for the KwaZulu-Natal outfit.

Onyango duly doubled the hosts lead in the 65th minute, as the Kenyan nodded home Deolin Mekoa’s corner-kick.

The Urban Warriors finally sparked back into life in the dying exchanges of the tie, and after Virgil Vries denied Aubrey Funga and Mayambela in quick succession – Kabwe found the back of the net for the second game in succession.

The Zambian bundling home from close range in the 85th minute of the clash.

Maritzburg United withstood a late spell of pressure to seal all three points as they move up to eighth place on the log standings.
