Cape Town City’s winless run in the DStv Premiership extended to seven matches after they were held 1-1 by Golden Arrows at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont on Saturday afternoon.
The Citizens last won in the league in late January and find themselves in eighth place on the log.
Abafana Bes’thende, meanwhile, missed out on recording a third straight win but remain in second place, now three points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
City got off to a flying start and claimed the lead just four minutes into the match.
A flowing move put Craig Martin into a scoring position down the right of the penalty area – his shot was saved by goalkeeper Sifiso Mlungwana, but the rebound fell kindly for Abdul Ajagun, who stroked the ball into an unguarded net for a goal on his league debut.
Arrows levelled the game just under 10 minutes later, with a free kick bouncing around in the penalty area before the ball struck the post and rebounded to Velemseni Ndwandwe, who gleefully struck home from close range for 1-1.
The Cape side should have reclaimed the lead on 28 minutes when Thabani Zuke misjudged a diagonal ball and allowed Aubrey Ngoma a clear sight of goal, but the attacker fired his left-footed effort way off target.
Arrows, meanwhile, threatened again and again down their left flank, with Divine Lunga and Pule Mmodi combining to create several dangerous opportunities, though City held firm in defence to see the game level at a goal apiece heading into the interval.
The Citizens had the first chance of the second half six minutes after the restart, with Terrence Mashego bursting down the left before playing a fine ball across the face of goal – Martin lunged to try and turn it home at the far post, but failed to make contact.
Midway through the second half Arrows needed Lunga to make a goal-line clearance at a corner kick, as he turned away a glancing header from Mashego which looked destined to ripple the back of the net.
City came close again in the 83rd minute, with Fagrie Lakay letting fly from just outside the penalty area – his shot had the beating of Mlungwana but not the crossbar, with the rebound almost presenting a second chance for the visitors before the offside flag was raised.
That proved to be the last major chance at either end, with the game finishing all square at 1-1.
The teams will return to DStv Premiership action in early April, with Arrows away to Swallows FC and City at home to Baroka FC.
