Golden Arrows denied Bloemfontein Celtic a first away win of the 2020-21 DStv Premiership season in a 1-1 draw at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Knox Mutizwa’s second-half goal cancelled out Mzwanele Mahashe’s opener in Clermont. The result leaves Arrows and Celtic in third and 10th spot in the league standings respectively.
Celtic opened the scoring in the 34th minute with the first noteworthy chance of the match. A deep corner-kick found an unmarked Mahashe at the far post and his header deflected off teammate Victor Letsoalo and into the back of the net, but the centre-back claimed the goal.
Abafana Bes’thende went in search of an immediate reply and came close four minutes later. Lindokuhle Mtshali created space for Velemseni Ndwandwe inside the area, but his resulting shot was tame and straight at Jackson Mabokgwane in the Siwelele goal.
Mutizwa came even closer in the 41st minute. The forward ran onto a perfecty-weighted lob over the opposition defensive line and had Mabokgwane beaten but his header cannoned off the woodwork and out of danger.
Celtic had a chance to double their lead in the 68th minute but Letsoalo nodded over from close range and he was made to rue that miss four minutes later, as the hosts pulled level.
Siphamandla Sabelo’s looping shot hit the woodwork and rather fortuitously bounced into the path of Mutizwa who reacted sharply to guide the ball into an open net.
Arrows were reduced to ten-men with two minutes of regulation time remaining as Ntsako Makhubela received his marching orders for a dangerous challenge, but the KwaZulu-Natal side were able to hold on for a point as Celtic remained winless on their travels since January 2020.
