BIDVEST WITS HELD TO ANOTHER DRAW

  • 24 AUG 2020

Bidvest Wits and Maritzburg United played to a 0-0 draw at TUKS Stadium in Pretoria on Monday afternoon.

The Clever Boys have now failed to score in three of their last four Absa Premiership matches and the result does their chances of making a late charge for the league title no good. A point moves Gavin Hunt’s troops up to third place on the log standings while Maritzburg remain in sixth.

The first chance of the match fell to Bidvest Wits in the 14th minute. A quick counter-attack left Rowan Human with a clear sight of goal, but Richard Ofori pulled off a good save before two goal line clearances denied Terrence Dzvukamanja and the Clever Boys the game’s opener in an incredible sequence of play.

Both teams continued to probe and Maritzburg too looked dangerous on the break. The Team of Choice conjured their best chance of the half with 39 minutes on the clock. Judas Moseamedi’s knock down fell favourably at Tebogo Tlolane’s feet but his deflected effort flashed over Ricardo Goss’ crossbar.

Bidvest Wits squandered two further chances in quick succession after the break. Good interplay between Haashim Domingo, Thabang Monare and Rowan Human opened space for the latter to shoot but he dragged his resulting shot wide of goal. The 19-year-old forward had another chance soon after but he again failed to hit the target with his left foot.

The Clever Boys had another attempt cleared off the line in the 65th minute. Sameehg Doutie timed his run to perfection and had Ofori beaten with his back-heel shot but Daniel Morgan was well positioned to clear from danger.

Maritzburg created a a similar chance of their own a minute later. Thabiso Kutumela rounded Ricardo Goss but Thulani Hlatshwayo and Lorenzo Gordinho teamed up to deny the hosts.

Both teams pushed forward in search of a decisive goal in the closing stages, but neither could find the goal they desired.
